Mathieu Costecalde

Co-founder, composer
Le Balcon - Mathieu Costecalde

Born near Paris in 1980, he has lived in London for many years. He studied clarinet with David Campbell at Canterbury Christ Church University, where he discovered his interest in composition. In 2006, he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music, where he trained under the guidance of Richard Baker, Julian Anderson, Julian Philips, Malcolm Singer, and Alexander Goehr. After a year at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in 2007, he graduated in London in 2008, earning his master's degree with honors and distinction.
In France, he studied composition with Frédéric Durieux and new technologies applied to it with Luis Naon, Tom Mays, Yann Geslin, and Karrim Haddad. He also works with professors at the Laboratoire d'Acoustique Musicale (LAM) and participates in seminars at IRCAM (Paris). In 2006, he collaborated with Andrew Culver and Merce Cunningham on "Ocean" at the Roundhouse. Thanks to his experience with "The Place," he developed a passion for contemporary dance, finding not only inspiration but also meaning in his creations. His chameleon-like style allows the dancer to take their place like an instrument in harmony; Mathieu likes his music to become one with the movement. Often driven by his poetic intuition, he has a visual conception of his universe and is interested in quantum physics.
In November 2008, he worked on an electronic device at the Barbican Centre in London, while presenting his latest compositions in Paris under the direction of Maxime Pascal with the contemporary ensemble Le Balcon. In February 2009, he participated in an artistic residency at La Samoisiene near Fontainebleau for the creation of "Corps de Sève" by choreographer Caroline Savi. In May 2009, the singer Julie Fuchs asked him to write “La Condition Postmoderne” – a work for soprano and real-time electronic music.
