Setan Jawa is a film-concert created by the Indonesian director and visual artist Garin Nugroho. The silent, black-and-white film tells the story of a Javanese Faust in the early 20th century. The originality and power of the project lie in the dual score written for the film.
Indonesian composer Rahayu Suppangha created a bespoke score for a gamelan ensemble, from which Australian composer Iain Grandage wrote the Western section for a symphony orchestra. Each ensemble will comprise fourteen musicians, gathered on stage at the foot of a large screen.
