Winner of the Jury's Special Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, La Planète Sauvage is a marvel of French animation. Directed by René Laloux and based on hundreds of original drawings by Roland Topor, the film tells the supernatural story of a cosmic tribe, the Draags, who have enslaved mankind. Faced with these dreamlike, blue-skinned, red-eyed creatures, humans eventually find the means to revolt. Alain Goraguer's music, a unique blend of psychedelic rock, experimental jazz and chiselled orchestration, has had a major influence on film music. Sampled dozens of times, it has also inspired artists such as Madlib (Quasimoto), J Dilla, Flying Lotus and DJ Shadow.
In 2021, pianist Nitai Hershkovits proposed a new adaptation of this original music, approved by the composer before his death. In collaboration with composer Othman Louati, this version will be adjusted and adapted for Le Balcon's instrumentalists.
