Le Balcon - Les Chants de l’amour

Gérard Grisey
Les Chants de l'Amour (1982-1984) [Songs of Love]
for twelve mixed voices and tape

"Music has at least one thing in common with Love, and that is that in it human beings discover and learn about Time. The first sketch of Les Chants de l'Amour, in fact the formal layout, dates back to the summer of 1981. At the time, I conceived the idea of large vocal polyphonies enveloped and sustained by a powerful fundamental. The “Chant” program*, designed by Xavier Rodet and Yves Potard at Ircam, and of which I had heard a few examples, immediately seemed to me to be the ideal instrument for creating this continuous voice and these respiratory pulsations, the veritable amniotic fluid of human voices.
